The Malecón


The havanan breakwater is a place of meeting for citizens and, for being one of main streets, it allows to connect fastly the east with the west of the Havana, because it borders the Vedado neighborhood, the Havanan downtown and the Old Havana.

There havanans accustomed to meet at all time to admire the view, relax, breath sea air, even at night when the landscape of the city with its lights turns wonderfull.

Its beginnings date back to 1937, then it was just a proyect of the engineer Francisco Albear, who newly present it in 1863, but the construction began few year later and he died before seeing his work finished.

The first part, that goes from the "Castillo de la Punta" up to the "Maceo Park", was built in 1901. The work continued throughout the years and finally the wall reaches the mouth of the river Almendares. Fidel Castro inagurated it in june of 1959.

It name since 1909 is "Major General Antonio Maceo", but is better known as Malecon Avenue and estretches for about six kilometers.

In the morning, in the evening or in the night is a unforgettable walk for anyone who visited Havana.
