Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y San Ignacio de Loyola Parish

Zone/Area: La Habana Ciudad

The idea of the foundation was born in the Old Belen School, under the leadership of the Father Vicente Leza, back in 1907. It was possible to see the great convenience and the real need that the Jesus Company had in the Havana a Temple comletely dedicated to excercise their ministeries , as it could only be done in a small chapel by priests whose principal duty was to give classes and attend the functioning of the educational center.

The first stone was put in august 7th of 1914, it was inaugurated in may 3rd of 1923, in which prior days was solemnly consagrated by the Bishop Pedro gonzalez Estrada. As principals founders it can be considered four people: Mrs Maria del Carmen Zozaya, Mr Francisco del Valle with his wife Fancisca Grau and the banker Mr Narciso Gelats, who helped with their contributions to raised the beautiful temple that is located in one of the most important avenues of the havanan capital.

The church that today is the Parish of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesus and San Ignacio de Loyola, has the residence of the Jesuits Fathers attached, which are one of the most exquisit building of a perfect neogothic style, whose idea and construction are owe to the brother Luis Gorgoza. The altar and the altarpiece are real artistic filigrees of marble, bronze and inlays.
