It holds the title of Humanity Heritage, for being part of the colonial fortification complex that protect the city, and is also a remarkable exponent for its circular plant and its little dimensions. In its beggings it has different names, Torreon de Caleta and Torreon de Vigia, for being located in the old creek where there were landings of corsairs and pirates. Near there, it was located the former Hospital of San Lazaro, for this reason it was denominated whit this name to the building and the territory where it was situated. Today is picturesque element of the urban landscape to be within the boundaries of the park dedicated to the Titan de Bronce, Place Teniente General Antonio Maceo Grajales and intermingling with the buildings on the Malecon Avenue. It is a compact construction of mampuesto, with a small access door, loopholes in its entire perimeter and malls on the roof. The historian Jacobo de la Pezuela attributes its construction to the engineer Marcos Lucio. This building is the symbol that identifies the municipality of Havana Center.
